This is one of five monthly meals being donated to support the LA Animal Shelter, special Thank You's to Sharon, Jo-Ann and Jasmine, personally I had a great time and with a full belly of Cabbage Rolls & Cake.

St. Paddy’s Day Leprechaun Luncheon

Top of the morning to you! Our St. Paddy’s Day Leprechaun Luncheon is fast approaching on March 17th. Because of overwhelming support for this event we will be forced to limit reservations due to space restrictions. We are once again offering eat ins and take outs but reserve as soon as possible to ensure a spot.

This event’s theme will be green and we are hoping to offer the Animal Shelter lots of green money. Our menu features cabbage rolls with a home made roll, pistachio cake and tea and coffee. A minimum donation of five dollars is required but thanks to most of our supporters for offering a minimum of ten. We will be hosting again from 185 D’Orsay Road at 12pm. - Takeouts offered from 11:15 to 12pm . We will not be accepting any take out orders on the day of the event so book those early as well since orders will be limited. The Commuting dogs of Moscow

STRAY dogs are commuting to and from a city centre on underground trains in search of food scraps.

The clever canines board the Tube each morning. After a hard day scavenging and begging on the streets, they hop back on the train and return to the suburbs where they spend the night. Experts studying the dogs say they even work together to make sure they get off at the right stop after learning to judge the length of time they need to spend on the train. The mutts choose the quietest carriages at the front and back of the train.

They have also developed tactics to hustle humans into giving them more food on the streets of Moscow.

Scientists believe the phenomenon began after the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s, and Russia's new capitalists moved industrial complexes from the city centre to the suburbs. Dr Andrei Poiarkov, of the Moscow Ecology and Evolution Institute, said: These complexes were used by homeless dogs as shelters, so the dogs had to move together with their houses. Because the best scavenging for food is in the city centre, the dogs had to learn how to travel on the subway to get to the centre in the morning, then back home in the evening, just like people.

The dogs have learned to use traffic lights to cross the road safely, said Dr Poiarkov. And they use cunning tactics to obtain tasty morsels of shawarma, a kebab-like snack popular in Moscow . They sneak up behind people eating shawarmas then bark loudly to shock them into dropping their food. With children the dogs play cute by putting their heads on youngsters knees and staring pleadingly into their eyes to win sympathy and scraps. Dr Poiarkov added: Dogs are surprisingly good psychologists.

The Moscow mutts are not the first animals to use public transport. In 2006 a Jack Russell in Dunnington, North Yorks , began taking the bus to his local pub in search of sausages. And two years ago passengers in Wolverhampton were stunned when a white cat called Macavity started catching the 331 bus to a fish and chip shop.

The Shelter's Annual Telethon is over and OMG what alot of work that was for the volunteers.

Sunday past was the Telethon and EastLink TV arrives at 8:00 am in the morning to setup their equipment. WELL !!! there was a bit of a snow storm the night before and the Lions Den building had no power and this is not an event you can cancel as we book a year in advance. Our volunteers are from all over Cumberland County, Nova Scotia and people are trying to decide if they could get to the event - volunteers, presenters and talent alike.

By 10:00 am the power was back on and everyone was rushing around getting the several scenes and backdrops ready. As the day went by the weather allow for people to arrive and the energy in that building was alive with excitement as the donations were being announced.

This Telethon was the most successful yet, the final numbers are not in yet but we should be hitting $19,000.

Paper Bag in the Middle of the Road

Next time you see a paper bag in the middle of the road you might want to look a little closer. One of our volunteers was driving down the road last week and they happen to focus in on a paperbag that the cars were driving over in the middle of the road. Quickly this volunteer realized that was no original paperbag it was in fact a small kitten scared and crouched in the middle of the road.

The kitten is at the shelter now with an appropriate name "CHASE" Just another one of God's little miracles.

The Animal Shelter recently received some much appreciated volunteer time and effort. A handy volunteer worked hard to replace all the badly damaged front kennel doors at the Shelter. These doors were so bad that some of the short haired dogs were quite cold over this winter past. Next winter will be much easier on them, thanks to our generous volunteer.

Have you ever wondered how many litters of kittens a cat can have?

Well here are some basic numbers to show how fast cat populations can get out of hand.

The average number of litters a fertile cat can produce in one year is 3.

The average number of kittens in a feline litter is 4–6.

In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can theoretically produce 420,000 cats.

Only 1 in 12 of those 420,000 cats born find a home. :o(

Even if you found homes for all your cats, you are still taking away homes that other homeless cats could have had by adding to the population.

There are no excuses for your allowing a pet cat to have kittens.

We three little kittens all arrived at the Shelter today, not altogether as seen here enjoying each others company. Two of us were dropped off in a beer box from someone's doorstep and the other was a 'toss and run'. Very young and very scared unsure of their fate hoping that all the strangers looking into their cage will not harm them.

If anyone has a soft spot for these little kittens please contact the shelter.

Jackson is re-born

This little rescue dog is on his way back to recovery. He was covered in fleas, ticks and sores all over his back end when rescued yesterday and arrived at the shelter.

First pics are before the Grooming, with already one bath.

Back from the local Groomer (who donated their time) Jackson says " I feel awesome now let's go for a drive around town and head home".

Jackson had a big day at the groomer and the vet. He is now enjoying some well deserved R & R.

Lost Kittie - Delilah

I have a beautiful amber eyed pure white turkish angora female cat 1 year old Delilah. She weighs 11 lbs. or did before she disappeared. She has been missing from the Trider Road Maccan area since Sunday July 19th. We have searched everywhere and I know your shelter is aware but I thought maybe She did have a pink collar with a tag saying who she was and where she lived but those can come off. We re hoping that she does come home and then she will have two sisters. I hope she likes that.

It's Summer Cottage Season

It is a busy time at the shelter, as people are off on vacation and enjoying their summer cottages. The adoption application numbers are down and the dog intake numbers keep getting higher. We have 9 dogs at the shelter as of today (2 can't be shown on the website) and the cats well that is another story we can hold 30 cats and the count to-date is well over 40.

New Look for the Shelter , first peek at the Office area

As always the LA Animal Shelter existence relies on the life blood of the volunteers. The additional volunteer efforts being putting into the new look of the office area are amazing!

Darby and her father along with Tara have gone above and beyond their regular work hours to re-design the look and feel of the shelters' office. Everytime I visit the shelter it's environment keeps getting better, it is cleaner than ever with very little clutter and now with the office area getting a well deserved facelift.

Few photos from the Walk-A-Thon today for the Animal Shelter in Amherst starting and finishing at the Amherst Stadium. This devoted group walked almost 5 KM's in the rain and wind, the dogs didn't seems to mind as much as their human friends. After the Walk-A-Thon everyone was invited over to a BBQ to dry out and chat. Good times in the Maritimes.

Dogs, Cats, Racoons?

Nothing ever surprises the staff at the Animal Shelter, someone dropped off a bucket of racoon babies tonight after hours they rushed in the driveway with a brown car and spun their tires quickly getting away from the shelter, showing in the photos the baby racoons eyes are not even open yet.

Of course the shelter can not keep the 4 racoons with the many disease these little guys carry, DNR has been called to come and pick up the racoons. But this is my first experience seeing racoons babies and with some gloves we got to pick them up, poor little things were crying not having a clue what is going on.

Assisting a new Mother Cat

Yesterday the shelter receive a phone call from a local resident about a mother cat having a kitten in the yard by their home. One of our volunteers brought this mother & kitten to the Animal Shelter. The kitten was covered in dirt and mud and the volunteers cleaned the kitten up as well as they could. Shown here is Rebecca helping to calm the very stressed new mother cat, the mother cat is in shock and not understanding that she needs to feed her baby.

Nalla arrived alongside her big brother Biggie immediately after her surgery. Upon her arrival, she was very timid and wary of her surroundings, but this soon changed. Nalla is a curious but shy kitty. She is always interested in everything that is going on around her, but she is not always willing to participate in the activities. Although she loves to be petted she is does not feel comfortable coming to you for affection; she would rather be approached slowly. Once she is comfortable, however, she absolutely loves the affection! Like her brother, she loves to flop onto her back and enjoy a nice massage. Her very soft purr is quite soothing. Nalla’s favorite pastime is playing with toys. She loves a feather and string toy where she can run and jump to catch the feather, and really enjoys teaming up with her brother to play. In play, she is quite bold and will take the lead, but in a relaxed social setting she would rather sit by herself and take in the action. Nalla’s favorite place to be is curled up on a cozy bed for a day long nap. She will make a wonderful addition to a gentle and caring family. I would guess she would prefer to be around adults and older children who wouldn’t startle her as easily.

Nalla need to find a forever home ASAP, she is in Foster Care, please contact the shelter if you are interested in Nalla or her brother Biggie.

Biscuit "Biggie"

Biscuit, whom is now 'Biggie' is a very large and formidable kitty weighing a healthy 10.5 lbs. Biggie arrived to my home immediately after his surgery and was quite nervous and wary of his new surroundings. Within a few hours he was exploring his new home albeit with some hesitation. Once he was recovered from his surgery, he became bolder in his explorations and was soon coming out to the living room to greet me, have a snack, and check out his new housemates. Upon three days of his arrival, Biggie adjusted and became a new, healthy, happy, affectionate kitty. As soon as I enter from my day at work, I can count on Biggie greeting me at the door and looking for some affection time. His favorite thing to do is flop onto my feet, roll on his belly, and purr while I pet his lovely soft, furry coat. He has adjusted to his new surroundings with ease and happiness. Not once have I heard a hiss nor a meow, and I know that Biggie appreciates his new home and his big breakfast each and every morning. He is an absolute joy to be around and I feel completely confident that he will make a fantastic kitty to any new and caring family. He gets along well with other cats and, although initially timid, he very much enjoys the company of any and all caring humans.

Biscuit needs a forever home ASAP, he is presently in foster care. Please contact the Shelter if you are interested in this lovely cat.

This photo is a new kitten that had been just born recently, just a reminder of the issues the Shelter will be dealing with in the Spring. Springtime is a time for new energy and excitement but also brings litters and litters of unwanted kittens. If everyone would spayed and neutered more cats the general poplulation of kittens could become more manageable.

Several of our Shelter committee members and volunteers got the privilege of attending a presentation today by Silvia Jay, Webite

Silvia says "Mindful Leadership puts dogs first, decreases stress and fear, and opens the door for true companionship. Your reward is voluntary compliance and reliable, consistent good behavior. "

We had a nice little bag lunch and lots of socializing.

These 2 cats were found abandoned in an apartment building in Amherst, the Landlord was shocked to find these cats with no food or water and the tenant gone. We are assuming they were left in the apartment for approx. 3 days. The Landlord quickly went to get some food and water and contacted the SPCA, the local LA Animal Shelter assisted with getting foster care for these 2 cats. If anyone is interested in adopting these cats please contact the Shelter.

RIP Sasha - Llasa Apso

Sasha was used for many years to produce puppies for sale and was finally signed over to our shelter. Sasha had a number health problems. Sasha did not make it through her last surgery.

Thanks also to the VanderRoest family, who adopted Sasha, welcomed her into their family of many dogs and gave her so much love in her final month.

Great Pyrenees/Maremma Cross needs home

We need to find a place for a 2 year old neutered male Great Pyrenees/ Maremma cross; lovely dog, good with children, cats, other dogs, sheep, goats, etc. Sleeps indoors but guards the property in the day. The farm is in the middle of a village and the dog treats the whole village as his territory to patrol and some of the less tolerant neighbours are complaining. Given the nature of this breed combo, he would be suited to a small farm, not too close to other houses. He is not in any way aggressive, but does bark at strangers at night. He is very large 150-200 lb
